Seminar I. And after Franco, what?

Thursday, January 15, 2026 at 6:00 p.m. by Andreu Mayayo i Artal, professor of Contemporary History and Current World at the University of Barcelona and director of SEGLE XX. His lines of research have focused on various studies: local history, the rural world, social, union and political movements and the transition to democracy in Spain.

On November 20, 1975, Francisco Franco died at the age of eighty-two. Franco’s regime was a military dictatorship legitimized by its victory in the Civil War (1936-1939) that caused a violent post-war period with harsh and persistent repression. In this sense, the conquest of democracy after the Franco dictatorship must be understood as a broad and plural process where nothing was written from the very beginning.
